Fiber-based Tissue Identification for Optical Guidance During Electrode Placement in Deep Brain Stimulation Neurosurgery
Optical fibres provide a unique way to sense information deep in the brain. In a clinical setting, expensive MRI machines are not always a luxury that is available for long periods of time and they can be complicated to use during neurosurgical implantation. Creating micro-endoscopes for tissue identification during neurosurgery can be a very interesting alternative for guiding neurosurgical implantation and monitoring diseases.
